LONG STORY SHORT... A C O L L E C T I O N O F P E R S P E C T I V E S
GO THE EXTRA MILE, IT’S NEVER CROWDED. One of my best managers would occasionally volunteer our team for all of the least desirable projects. Projects that no one else wanted to do either because of the perceived complexity or the low return on investment...or they were just down right filthy. We were doing a project to open up some manufacturing space on the plant floor and we asked him, “Why do you always volunteer us for these types of projects?” He replied, “Because no one else wants to do them. It’s just like flipping an old house...it’s an eye sore in the neighborhood and everyone wants it demolished but if you slap on a fresh coat of paint, put some landscaping in, rip out the carpet and update the fixtures, then it becomes the highlight of the neighborhood.” He also said, “Similar to the projects we volunteer for, the situations are so bad that people automatically count themselves out but in reality, it’s not that difficult. Plus whoever addresses the issue earns the respect. Even if you fail, you’ll be rewarded for taking on the risk.” The lesson learned is to Go the Extra Mile...the road may seem uncharted, lonely, and impossible...the critics may even question your decision but when all is said and done, you’ll always leave a lasting impression. ▪
